Jun 24th, Somaya Critchlow’s universe is one inhabited by lyrical nuance.Her characters, black women poised in the nude, are defiant, melancholy, and mischievous. Finding a definiteness in the subjects is impossible—they fragment into themselves, unraveling more questions for every answer imposed upon them.

She studied Painting at the University of Brighton before attending the Royal Drawing School, where she earned her Postgraduate Diploma. This is her third solo exhibition, following Sincere for Synonym at Fortnight Institute, Sincere for Synonym (taken from Critchlow's eponymous piece of writing that is constructed around using interplaced titles borrowed from episodes of the TV series Love and Hip Hop) is the second solo exhibition by artist Somaya Critchlow (b. 1993, UK).It brings together a selection of works that cross reference contemporary ways of existence through historical methods of seeing.
